In the documentary film, The Story of Stuff, Annie Leonard examines our national obsession with stuff and how it all began. She attributes our consumption addiction to the post-World War III economic policies that propagandized the notion of buying stuff. Our insatiable appetites haven’t been able to stop since.

That is, until now.

With the decline of the economy – whether directly affected or not – we have all started to take pause before making a purchase. More importantly, we are beginning to take inventory of the stuff that we do have. Even more so, we are beginning to feel taken over by all the stuff that we have accumulated over the decades, which is why so many of us are having the urge to purge or declutter our homes.

But is it as easy as making some runs to Goodwill?

Of course not.

Why?

We have become addicted, or emotionally attached, to our stuff.

Buying and accumulating stuff is just another way to distract ourselves from our present lives. Like cigarettes or alcohol, our stuff is a quick fix to feeling good. But when the high wears off, we are left with an icky feeling. But we need the icky feeling so that we can punish ourselves and perpetuate our guilt. And then we need the high again so that we don’t feel the pain, and the circle continues.

Is this an overreaction to buying a new toaster?

Maybe. But consumption can be an addiction (or at the least an emotional attachment) that, unlike cigarettes and alcohol, is hard to recognize because it is so affirmed by our friends, family, media, and government.

So how do we detach from our stuff?

Awareness is power. Knowing what and why we are attached to our stuff or certain items will oftentimes break the emotional attachment with our stuff. For some of us, having a lot of stuff is simply a distraction from our everyday life.

A cluttered space results in a cluttered mind, which is exactly what some of us want, at least subconsciously. In the same way alcohol makes things fuzzy, having a lot of things in your space will do the same. And on some level, that is the desired outcome.

For many of us, it is certain items that are difficult to part with. It may be books and magazines for some or old pictures, clothes, gifts, collections, etc. for others. Either way, if you don’t love an item or don’t use it, then it is time to part with it.

If you are still having resistance, then it’s time to acknowledge an emotional attachment to the item(s). Here’s what to do….

Start asking yourself questions.

What am I feeling right now?

What memories does this item bring up?

Who gave it to me?

Why did I originally buy it?

Who does it remind me of?

Do I feel guilty getting rid of this item? If so, why?

Why?

Why?

And Why?

Be your own detective… or therapist.

It’s never just about the item, it’s about the emotion the item holds.

Get to the root of why you are hanging on to an item that you know would be in your best interest to get rid of. You may be surprised. What you thought was just an old hairbrush may actually be a reservoir of past emotions that you and your sister shared when she helped you get ready for prom. Or maybe the green gingham shirt with the price tag on it conjures up guilt for buying things that are on sale and never wearing them. Until acknowledged, the shirt will hang in your closet serving only to attract the pattern for more guilt.

And so it’s not about detaching from the item, per se. It’s about acknowledging and FEELING THE EMOTION that you have stored away in this item. MAKING PEACE WITH IT in the form of crying, forgiving, remembering, resolving, etc. AND THEN MOVING ON.

Once you have awareness around an item, you will be amazed at how easy it will be to let go of it. If you have the awareness but still don’t want to get rid of the item, then it may simply be too early. See how you feel the next round of decluttering.

To start the process of decluttering, I recommend working in baby steps with attainable goals as I set out in my book, 27 Things to Feng Shui Your Home. You will build up the confidence that will keep you going through the long haul. Once you realize that life will go on with fewer items, you will not only want to clear out more stuff, but will start to feel free.

And when you feel this sense of freedom you know you have mastered the art of detaching from your stuff.

If you’ve thought about starting a meditation practice or tried to meditate and gave up, then this is the article for you. I went from being a left-brained business-minded attorney to a right-brained healer with meditation being my bridge. However, when I first started attempting to meditate, I found it extremely frustrating. That is, if I was able to sit there more than 10 minutes without my back hurting or my legs falling asleep. What most people do not realize is that meditation is an art. And all arts take practice.

You may ask why then should I put in the time to practice meditation? Countless studies have shown that meditation has both short- and long-term benefits to brain structure and function. Specifically, the insula which connects the emotional center and thinking center, along with the amygdala, which is tied to the fight-or-flight impulses, actually change in form. Thus, meditators are more aware of what’s going on in their environment and thus more in control of their responses.

Translation: People who meditate deal with stress much better and thus have fewer stress-related illnesses.

Step 1: Set up a Meditation Space

Once you’ve made a decision to start practicing meditation, the first step is to designate a space. For tips on setting up a meditation space in your home, read 4 Steps to Create Your Personal Sanctuary. Having a designated space is, in my opinion, crucial. Ask any artist. They will tell you that a designated space to paint, write, cook, etc. is a necessity. The size of the space is not important, but privacy is. If you are unable to close off the space, then using a decorative screen to create a boundary is an option.

Step 2: How to Sit

This may seem pretty straight-forward unless and until you’ve tried it. Sitting cross-legged on a meditation cushion or folded yoga blanket(s) is the most common “seat” for meditation. If you find that your back starts to hurt, then start out sitting against a wall or in an upright chair.

If you can sit cross-legged with not much problem, I would recommend using a meditation cushion to prevent your legs from losing circulation and falling asleep. For me, I had been doing yoga for years which is a great preparation for meditation. (In fact, yoga was originally used for preparing for yoga by the ancient yogis.) Even so, it took me about 6 months until I could sit for 30 minutes without my back hurting. There are “meditation muscles” in your back that most likely have been dormant. So make as many adjustments as you need.

You don’t need to sit like a monk in Tibet. But you do want your spine upright.

Step 3: How to Meditate

Once you have your space with a comfortable sitting position, the next step is the actual meditation. For any first-time meditator I recommend to start out listening to a guided meditation or meditation music using headphones (the bigger the better). Headphones not only help block out noises, but create an inward world where it’s just you. In other words, your attention turns from the external world to your internal world.

There are countless options for guided meditation. I am particularly picky about the guide’s voice and my personal preference is Deepak Chopra. So before you purchase something, listen to a sample to make sure you find the voice soothing and not annoying. As for meditation music, I prefer the technological entrainments that help balance the right and left brain. Anything with sudden noises, such as birds, cricket and thunder, I find very disruptive.

Whether you use a guided meditation, music, or go it alone with silence, the most important tip I can share is contrary to what any meditation source will tell you: For the first 5 minutes, let your mind run wild! Let it go wherever it wants. Set it free. Instead of fighting it, just let it go. Your mind will feel like wild horses having been cooped up for years. Free them. You’ll be amazed at what might come up. For me, I might recall a dream I had the night before, remember that I was supposed to call someone, or think about what I want to do that day.

And then after you’ve given your mind 5 minutes to basically flood itself (use a timer if you feel like you might get carried away), start to rein it in. And then start to quieten your mind.

Or another way to think of it is this: Create a space in between your thoughts.

From here, bringing your focus to your breath is a good starting place. For the breath is always there in repetition. Counting breaths can be very effective, i.e. Inhale One, Exhale One, Inhale Two, Exhale Two. Start out trying to do this for ten counts without thinking about anything else. Sound easy? Give it a try. You may be surprised. Once you can make it to ten, do it to twenty, and so on. You are controlling the mind instead of the mind controlling you.

This is the part of meditation that will take the most practice. Not thinking about anything!

Each time you can quieten the mind or create more space in between thoughts, it will be easier the next time. Let it gradually build up over time. For example, you may start out for 10 minutes the first week; 15 minutes the next week; and so forth.

Set reasonable goals.

Don’t expect to be a master after one week or even one month. It took me well over a year before I got to a place in my meditation where I felt comfortable with it, which for me was sitting in meditation blissfully for 30-45 minutes.

The work that you put into your practice will be mirrored in your daily life.

You will automatically start living more and more in the present moment. And then one day when your mind is completely quiet, you realize through a deep and profound feeling of knowingness that you are not your mind, but spirit. And this, in my opinion, is the most important benefit of meditation.

When I go to people’s home for feng shui consultations, I often hear clients immediately apologizing for their clutter. And then they point the finger at their children (and then their spouse!). While it is true that having a child or children is cause for more things in the house, it doesn’t mean your home has to be cluttered up.

Let’s first differentiate between simply having toys lying around the house AND clutter. For children, clutter would be anything that is no longer being used or enjoyed. And as children quickly grow up and change daily, clutter can pile up quickly. For items sitting around that are not clutter, then those are ripe for organization.

One of the best things about having children is the sense of play that they exude and that’s certainly something you don’t want to lose. With having kids, the perfectly clean zen home is most likely a thing of the past (that is, if you had it to begin with). That being said, there are some ways to maintain a sense of peace, balance and order in the house without the accumulation of clutter.

1. Be the Example. Children learn by watching their parents. If you keep your personal spaces clean, i.e. your bedroom, then they will already have a leg up. Or if you are cleaning up, show your child what you are doing even to the point of narrating the process. Those who are clutter-prone usually had clutter bug parents. It is a learned trait. Stop the cycle in your family!

2. Teach Your Child Organizational Skills. Organization is learned. It does not come natural for many people, especially more right-brained folks. So, if you are not the poster child example for your child, then teach them organization. There are hundreds of books on the topic. Start with an organization system in their closet, i.e. shoe racks, sweater shelves, etc. Show them where their dirty clothes go, where stuffed animals go, and where board games go. Believe it or not, they want to know.

3. Budget in Clean-up time. Make it a part of your child’s play time as clean-up time. For example, if they have an hour or two of play-time, dedicate the last 5 or 10 minutes to clean-up time. This will carry over into all areas of their life for the rest of their life!

4. Make it Fun. Whenever I mention the “C” word in workshops the look of drudgery comes over the audience. Clearing clutter does not have to be painful. In fact, I recommend turning on some good music, pour yourself a glass of wine, and maybe even grab a buddy. As for your children, it’s all about how you sell it. Make it fun, upbeat, and positive. Don’t pass the negative attitude on to your child (or the wine!).

5. Explain the Bigger Picture. Clearing clutter can be a great teaching moment for children. Have them help you pack up toys and clothes they no longer use in order to donate to those less fortunate. Children are inherently kind hearted and will enjoy this process. This will make it easier the next time and the next time until they automatically start collecting unused items.

The bottom line is that children want to live in a clutter-free home. Studies show that they think better, socialize better, and feel better about themselves. In my article, Making a House a Home for Children, I discuss the benefits of a clutter-free home as it relates to the development of children. And with some simple teaching moments from the above list, children will quickly pick up on organizing skills which will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

So the next time you start to point the finger in the household, think about more productive actions you can take. We’ll work on the spouse later!

I was recently inspired by one of my coaching clients. We were discussing practical and logistical steps for her setting up a website. It was something she had been putting off for a while and I could detect her hesitancy. And then she said this, “I think I have an issue with taking up space.” Taking up space. And then it was a week later when I found myself dealing with this exact issue.

About a month ago I moved into a new home. Not literally new, but a 1904 brick Victorian. It had been occupied for eons by an old man, was completely renovated and even the subject of a Canadian reality show – Meet the Wilsons. It is now a beautiful, modern home with lovely exposed brick and a clawfoot tub. About a week into living there, I realized we were not alone, but shared the space with a ghost.

In the early 1900′s the home was a pastor’s home with its sister home being the church next door. Apparently our cohabitant had come to the pastor’s home for forgiveness, but didn’t get everything he needed. A week before Halloween I assisted him in moving onward and upward. I had gotten to know him and was oddly comforted by his presence. Moments after he left, I felt an emptiness in the house. It was a small sampling of what parents must feel when their child leaves for the weekend to go back to college. And like what most mothers do, I start busying myself to distract from the emptiness.

Within thirty minutes I see a mouse run across the kitchen floor. I scream. I can deal with ghosts, but NOT mice. Over the next few days, there were traces – my dog sniffing in odd places, another sighting, an uneasiness. I was to the point that I didn’t want to be home after dusk.

For many years, I have been compiling a list of the metaphysics of the home for a future book. As every part of our home is a representation of our emotional, mental, or physical Self. And my homes have always been my greatest teachers. And so I began to wonder what the meaning of all this was. And then I remembered what my client said, “I think I have an issue with taking up space.” And it hit me. I was not taking up my own space! This is just another way of saying, “I’m not using my power. I am underutilizing myself and allowing others to overpower me.” If you don’t take up your space, then someone or something else will – whether it be a ghost, mice, a competitor, your mother, or even a friend.

And if you can’t take up the space in your own home, then you sure as hell aren’t going to be able to do it out in the world.

When I realized that this was what was happening in my own home – that I energetically had not claimed the space as mine yet – I got to work. I cranked up Mumford & Sons, got out the mop, and amped up my energy. I was tired of being fearful of the mice. I was tired of something else taking over MY home. I felt a new sense of power that I had never felt before. I claimed it as my home and completely filled every corner and nook & cranny with my energy. This was MY house. I wondered where else in the world I haven’t been taking up my rightful space.

Have you taken up the space in your home? In the world?

I am happy to say that I haven’t seen a mouse since.

Claim your space.

My favorite quote and the mantra I try to live by is Ghandi’s ”Be the change you want to see in the world.”

But there is another Ghandi quote that to me is equally poignant. He says:

“Our contribution to the progress of the world must consist of setting our own house in order.”

As a feng shui consultant, this is music to my ears. You can take this quote as literal or figurative as you want. Either way, I can’t help but think that if we each placed our attention on our home or whatever space we take up on this Earth, how amazing our Planet could be. It would be wonderful if we could all have a perfectly feng shui-ed home with its energy perfectly harmonized with Mother Earth.

But, to me the ultimate goal of feng shui is to love your home as if it’s a sanctuary.

In doing so, you are simply loving yourself and treating yourself as the sacred temple that you are.

So here are some simple suggestions to turn your home into a sacred sanctuary. And, in doing so, it can be a beacon of light on our planet as will its occupants.

1. Decluttering. I mention decluttering first because you must get rid of the old before you can bring in the new. If you are one of the many who has gone through or wants to go through a massive purge, you are certainly not alone. Our planet is going through a major clearing and that trickles down to each and every one of us. If decluttering sounds monumental and overwhelming, then just start with one drawer. It may lead to another one and another and so on. If you are someone who declutters on a regular basis and thinks that this doesn’t apply to you, then think again! There are so many layers to our things. That which we most need to get rid of is oftentimes right under our nose. What is taking up valuable space in your life? What item(s) are preventing you from loving your home?

2. Set Up an Altar Space. Early architects truly understood sacred geometry and how to build churches and cathedrals. They built tall steeples to reach God. You can do this, too, with an altar space—except your steeple is energetic. Each time you sit down to meditate you are a steeple. This is the benefit of an altar space. It creates an energetic vortex so that each time you sit down to meditate you ‘plug-in’ quicker and deeper. Your altar space can be as simple or elaborate as you want. The most important thing is that it is a designated space for this purpose. It is best to have a centering device—whether it be a table, shelf, or cardboard box. Place objects on your altar that are sacred to you.

3. Display Power Objects. We all have certain items that are really special to us. These are items that energize, inspire, and connect. For example, one of my power objects is a hand-made tapestry that I purchased in Peru. When I see it across from my desk it energizes me. The colors, the symbols, and the craftsmanship are inspiring. Other examples could be a love note from your beloved, a powerful crystal, a piece of pottery from your travels, or an art piece you crafted. Ideally, every item in our home should be a power object. Do an inventory of your home and notice what energizes you and what depletes you and rearrange accordingly.

4. Designate a Yoga Space. By creating a space for doing yoga, you are creating new space for your yoga practice to deepen. Your home practice is where you begin to truly tune in to what you want your yoga practice to be. You become your own inner guru, or upaguru in Sanskrit. Maybe you are feeling energized and do an extensive series of warrior poses and arm balances. Or perhaps you are feeling tired and need to do slow and deep hip openers on the mat. If space allows, you can arrange your yoga space and altar space in the same area of your home. If space is at a premium, then you may have to be more creative with your arrangement, but it should at least be the size of your unrolled yoga mat.

5. Space Clear. There is an invisible world of energy in your home that you probably are not aware of. Like cell phone and radio signals, our thoughts and emotions swirl around in our spaces. But what you may not have thought about is the energy from previous owners’ emotions and traumas, your furniture’s history and stories, or even your own stuck patterns and habits. Space clearing is a term used in feng shui that refers to clearing the energy in spaces. There are many methods used for space clearing. And in some extreme cases, you may need a professional to come in. Otherwise, you should space clear your home yourself periodically. Sage smudging is the most common method. With a bundle of sage, light the tip and waft it around your space. It’s best to start around the perimeter—especially hitting the corners—and end up in the center of the room. When the smoke has cleared, you may notice the room looks crisper and feels lighter.

Almost exactly a year ago, I wrote the article Why You May be Having a Sudden Urge to Declutter Your Home. Since then it has been so amazing to see how decluttering has become as commonplace and popular as shopping once was. I overhear conversations on Facebook and real life of people talking about how much stuff they have gotten rid of and, more importantly, how much better they feel. There is such a magic in releasing items that are no longer in our highest and best interest, which I call density.

I oftentimes go to clients’ homes for a feng shui consultation and the first thing they want to know is what they can buy to put somewhere. But the magic happens in what you take out of your home, not what you put into it. In my book 27 Things to Feng Shui Your Home, I organized the book in a sort of chronological order of how you should approach your home. Clearing out the clutter is first! Adding items that we may think of as the traditional feng shui enhancements is last.

If you are one of the many who has gone through a massive purge this last year, you are certainly not alone. And the good news is that it may be time to actually add an item or two to your home. One of the great things about decluttering is that you are much more particular about buying things in the future. Only purchase items that you absolutely love. Put back things in your home that totally inspire you. I call these “power objects.” It may be a treasure you picked up on a vacation or a sweet note from your love.

As I’m getting ready to move to a new home, I have pared down my items. I know that as I unpack, I will further declutter as I reveal objects that no longer resonate with me as they once did. I want every item in my home to be something that I absolutely love. I want it filled with only power objects.

I received this email the other day….

“I picked up your book yesterday. I love it!! After only skimming a few chapters I was inspired to start making some changes…well, I’ve been inspired to make changes for a long time, I just didn’t know exactly where to begin. So tonight, after two days of clearing clutter, packing up some bags for Goodwill, rearranging my bedroom & my daughters’ bedroom, and smudging with sage & sweetgrass, I am going to bed in a different house! It feels fantastic. One of my favorite things is how my girls have really gotten into it. They are only 8 and 9 but I’ve found them picking up the book and reading sections…very curious and intrigued. They were thrilled to rearrange their room and I have honestly noticed a difference in energy in all of us. ”

What a great example of putting the OM back into your Home!

The following is an excerpt from 27 Things to Feng Shui Your Home (Turner Publishing):

In my clutter clearing workshops, it is the “just in case” items that seem to garnish the most inner confusion and resistance. Why? Because it goes to the root of trust. Trust in the Universe? Trust in God? No. Trust in yourself!

What exactly constitutes a “just in case” item? It is any item that you are keeping just in case of a negative condition occurring that is
within your control. In other words, you are keeping the item because you don’t trust yourself. For example, keeping a snow shovel in Tennessee in case it snows is okay. In Tennessee we get a significant snowfall about once every five years. This is a condition that is beyond your control.

On the other hand, someone who keeps their “fat clothes” in case they gain weight back after a diet is a condition that is within their control. Understandably, someone losing weight doesn’t want to have to repurchase clothes in their old size in case they gain the weight back. But do you really think someone is going to keep the weight off if they already think they won’t? Of course not. If someone really wants to maintain their new weight, then getting rid of the old clothes is the first thing they should do.

In a workshop I held with cancer patients, one woman spoke up and admitted that she was keeping her “skinny” clothes “just in case” her cancer came out of remission. Be conscious of what messages you are sending out to the Universe and therefore telling yourself. Your belief in accomplishing something is the single most important part of implementing and maintaining change. According to Lynne McTaggart in The Intention Experiment, studies using the placebo effect showed that patients with the belief and expectation of a successful operation fared better than those who had actually received the operation.

In another study, scientists discovered the destructive power of having a negative intention. A negative intention is more likely to manifest a negative result than a positive intention has for bringing about a positive result. This is a testament to the importance of what messages we are sending out. Instead of saving money in the event of a negative consequence, invest in yourself and your belief in a positive outcome. It will be the best long-term investment you can make.

Many people are turning to alternative medicine for treating aches, pains, diseases, and even cancer. There are so many mind-body modalities that are being used successfully on their own, or in conjunction with Western medicine. With access to both, we should use the best of both worlds – Eastern and Western medicine.

One modality that originated in Chinese Medicine is Feng Shui. We may think of feng shui as more of a way to apply furniture and objects aesthetically, but it can actually be extremely useful in prevention and healing of illnesses.

Our home is a mirror of ourself. It holds a certain vibration. And in some cases, it may be a low vibration that is keeping you stuck, preventing you from getting well, or even causing you to get sick.

Feng Shui is ultimately about harmonizing our living spaces with the Earth’s energy. As we have become further removed from nature and the natural rhythms of the earth’s energy, so have our living spaces. Feng Shui helps improve the energy flow in your home. As the energy in your home harmonizes and improves, so does the energy within your body.

Before you ever move into your home, there is an energy environment taking place as a result of the land it sits on, the direction it faces, the slope of the land, and the natural elements around it. Some houses simply have better energy than other homes just by the way they sit on the lot.

That being said, the most powerful determinant of the energy within our homes is ourselves. We are powerful energizers that can change the energy in the space by where we place furniture, what we stuff in our closet, and simply by what emotions we emit into the space. Over time, mental and emotional patterns form in our home as a result of our energy. And in the case of an illness, such as Cancer, it is of utmost importance that those patterns get broken up and dispersed in order for healing to take place.

With a specific type of Cancer, such as asbestos cancer or Mesothelioma, environment is especially important. Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is a direct result of environment, specifically exposure to asbestos. There are other types of Cancer that have been linked with spaces containing high radiation or other environmental toxins. Because the body is already weakened and sensitized to environment, it is extremely important that those with such diseases have proper energy flow in their home, hospital, or place of healing.

For those battling any type of Cancer or illness, your home, hospital room, or temporary home needs to feel like a sanctuary. It is the space in which you feel most comforted, safe, and at peace. A Feng Shui consultant can assist with making your space feel like a sanctuary, which will assist in your healing journey.

In such cases, a Feng Shui consultant would look at the land, test for geopathic stress, consider the floor plan and furniture arrangement, determine where the Health section of the house is, identify clutter zones, clear stagnant energy, and look for any other blocks of energy that may be present.

Similar to the way our body gives clues as to our mind, our home gives us clues, or, in some cases, red flags as to our mind and body. As you make positive changes to your home, you will make positive changes to your mind and body.

This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you might find that nothing happens here. But if you have a sacred place and use it, something will eventually happen. Your sacred space is where you find yourself again and again.”
